Wheel Bearings - How Hard? 850 1993

Looks like I will soon need to replace my wheel bearings. The noise I am hearing is like the running over the rumble strips on the road See my post on this a few days ago) and getting louder. I've checked CV, tires and rotor. They are all OK.

Is this a job that I can tackle in my driveway? Any special tools? Is it just a matter of repacking the bearings? Any parts I should order? How much time am I looking at?

Any advice would be great!

'93 850 with 180,500 miles.

    Wheel Bearings - How Hard? 850 1993

    I replaced the left front hub and bearing assembly. I picked up a used lower mileage one from a salvage yard. I don't believe you can just change the bearing, at least without a press. The hardest part was getting the spindle nut off...you may need an air impact wrench. I did not have one at the time and ran down to a local service station and had them bust it loose...then snugged it back up for the short drive home. I don't recall any major problems...if I recall, you will probably need a fork to separate the tie rod end. I think it ruined the better part of a half a day. If it is the rear...I have no idea.

      I see the hub assembly is sold with the bearing installed and wonder if the bearing is just pressed in place or is it staked or otherwise permanently installed. I'd think a replacement bearing could be sourced from a local industrial bearing distributor and a machine shop could press it in.

        seems it may be more than pressed in.......I just know it was a lot easier to replace the whole thing. I replaced it a year ago....so don't remember all the details
