Wiper Relay V70-XC70 1998

The return of the Intermittent Wiper Relay Thread

I bought Bosch Wiper Relay 3B0 955 531 on the advice of the local VW dealer. Took the lower part of the dash off and saw five relays in an L shape. Three across the top and then two down on the inboard side of the car.

Can anyone tell me which is the correct relay to swap - the pin-outs all look the same and none appear to be marked. Also, can anyone confirm this part no?

The archives indicated the second (or middle) relay across the top was the one for the int. wipers. Tried replacing that one and didn't seem terribly programmable. Not knowing what each of the relays is, I didn't want to plug and play.

Oh and of course, it's dark and I thought I would just duck out and plug it in and my bride would never be the wiser. Now I get to explain why the dashboard of "her" car is still in pieces in the morning.

Thanks.

Bill

The relay cluster behind the instrument panel consists of 4 rows and 4 columns.
The top 3 rows each have 4 sockets; the bottom row only 3.
In the table below, the upper left position is R1 C1 (row 1 column 1), relay position 201.
The lower right position is R4 C4, relay #215.
The front intermittent wiper relay is the 2nd socket from the left, top row.

Thanks for the info. I confirmed from another source that the part number was correct. You were kind enough to tell me I was plugging the right hole, so to speak. Plugged it all together and the intermittent wipers worked but were not programmable.

The fault then must then fall on the new relay itself, I says to meself. After looking closer, the relay I bought was marked KAE not Bosch but had a Bosch part no.

After some due diligence on a Saab or Audi board, which almost all use the same relay, one poster noted that there are a number of knock-offs and all work EXCEPT KAE, which is as that author noted and this author confirms - are pieces of sh&t.

New BOSCH relay from the VW dealer and all works according to plan.

Thank you again. Your post is one for the FAQs.

Could you tell me where you got the relay and how much it was.

        TIA

The first non-working relay from importec, an advertiser here. The second working bosch relay I bought at the local VW dealer who knew exactly what I wanted. The first was $20 + shipping + aggravation; the second was $35 (and I test drove a Passat W8 :) )
