New T5 Owner S70 1999

Well, I took the plunge. After 5 years of loving my NA 850 I am getting a T5. Silver with the graphite leather/alcantara, in-dash changer, 33,000 miles, etc. Car even comes with a set of mounted snows that the previous owner left in the trunk. I pick it up early next week after the shop puts on new pads, flushes tranny. Power delivery is amazing once the turbo spools up. Now maybe I can keep up with my wife in her 240 hp Odyssey! Any thoughts as to what I should do to the car immediately? I am thinking about a strut brace and will definitely switch to synthetic oil. I now need to find a home for my 850.

K&N filter is a must, Synthetic oil is a good idea also. Go to newandusedvolvoparts.com and get there Zimmerman cross drilled rotors and Mintex pad combo and then call IPD and order there rear shim kit and a ss brake line kit and take all of these items to your local midas and have them installed with DOt4 synthetic fluid. This set up is 4 times superior to the factory one. enfrank@iupui.edu if you have any questions.

If you're worried about warranty re installing a strut brace, put in the Volvo strut brace. Same part # as used on the 850, and if you shop around, you can get it for around $150-160. Also check into the Magnefine in-line filters for power steeriing and transmission oil lines; easy to install on the powersteering line, and a pain in the *** on the tranny line. If you intall on the tranny, spend about $6 extra for a long pair of hoses, so you can put it in a loop that makes the filter a lot esier to locate where it can be changed without hiring a hunchbacked leprechaun with six arms.

I got the in-line Magnefine filters from IPD, but you can do a Google search for Magnefine and possibly deal with them direct. I haven't had them in long enough to tell what the benefit is ( only bought the car last June)

The first thing I did was to install a K&N drop in air filter, turbo seems to spool up faster and a more responsive. I'd definitely switch to a synthetic oil as it offers more much protection for the turbo. Reluctant to do anything else until the warranty runs out. Had my T5 for about eight months and finally managed to locate all those annoying rattles and squeaks!

        Hi Steve,
If you thought your wagon sounded like a bus try driving a 95 Saturn, between the rattles and that groaning engine it was just deafening.

The rattles and squeaks on my 98 S70 T5 just got unbearable so I had a friend drive around going over potholes while I listened. It sure is hard listening for rattles/squeaks while driving. These other drivers must think that I had some sort of some strange reaction everytime I ran over a pothole!

The first I did was tighten all the torx fasteners on the dash (about six), there're found behind the side and centre vents. Next was rattle from the dash tweeters, put a dab of silicone on the plastic fasteners. Next was a squeak on the centre console near the ashtray/coin holder fixed with putting some liquid silicone where the trim touches each other. Next was a squeak from the glove box which I swear sounded like a mouse which was fixed by spraying some liquid graphite lube on the lock & latch mechanism. The last one I found was a squeak from the seatbelt receptacle of both the driver and passenger seat, I sprayed some WD40 on the spring and where it pivots. My quest continues as there is this strange "boing" noise everytime I go over a bad pothole, sounds like it's coming from the driver's side somewhere. I'm starting to think I'm getting a little obsessed.
