oil leak 850

Does anyone have a clue as to what the likely cause of an oil leak is........it appears to be at the crankshaft seal or above. I have not spent much time looking, it just started last week. Car has about 150K on it....I can't stand leaks and need to fix, looking for a little input before I get to involved in search. I am afraid seals can't be replaced with engine in the car!!!!!?????? So hoping maybe another possible cause. Any input is welcome.

thanks
mark

    oil leak 850

    Hi,

I experiment same problem last summer. I got oil leak from the crankshaft seal. To make a short story, I had to remove the tranny, remove the old seal, replace it and put back the tranny. It took 2 day and a half. Now, it dont leak anymore except of a small leaking from the same place. The mecanic said that it has to be done after 200 000 km. If you want more detail on how to do it, just buzz me. I may be able to help you.

Most probably the rear main seal(common problem). If it is a turbo then the oil return line seal could also be the prob. Beware rear main seal involves removing the gearbox. If you get volvo to do this then it will be $$$. If the leak is small just keep sticking that oil in.

You don't mention whether your 850 is a turbo model or not. I have a 97 855 T-5 and experienced an oil leak right at the 100K point. After reading the Brickboard and researching possible causes I elected to replace the oil filler cap gasket that was hard as a rock and the turbo return line gaskets and o-ring. Fixed my problem;, although your problem might be completely different altogether. You can check outr Volvospeed.com and in the repair section of Bay 13 it has a few ideas on possible oil leaks. The entire bottom of my engine was covered in oil so it was difficult to detremine where it was coming from and the small amount of money ($10) and time (30 minutes) made all the difference for me. Good luck. dw

    Hi
My limited knowledge says: >search archives section on oil leaks & you'll get tons of info.>Front camshaft seal=remove belts & timing belt.>rear camshaft seal =remove air intake components & distributor.>rear main seal (which I just had done)=remove air intake & transaxle for about $800, >first check &/or replace the oil cap gasket, if leaks from there it can travel down the top cover. Good Luck, Have fun.
Worst case they drop the tranny, not the engine. Go to a good Volvo only shop.
