Unidentified Sound 850 1994

Hi,

I recently purchased a 94 850 Turbo Wagon with about 53,000 on it. The car was really well maintained (I have all the Volvo service records) and looks and runs great.

The only strange thing seems to be a sound that both my wife and I hear when we first start driving the car but can't identify. When we first start driving the car it sounds as if someone is locking one of the doors. The sound seems to come from the front left. We only hear it once and then not again. The car seems to be performing well -- I would just like to know what the sound is.

Any ideas?

Abe F.

It sure sounds like the ABS self-diagnostic check. It does this test everytime you start up and drive. You'll notice it won't happen again until you shut off the engine and start up again.

Does this happen parked or once you start rolling?

The brakes do a self-test at 19 mph that is kind of noisy on 95s. Not
sure if 94s are as loud (later years are quiter). Makes a crunchy sort
of sound for about a second.

Turn the radio off, start the car and see if the sound persists... Mine does that but it's the radio antenna reach "fully extended"... If the radio is off, the antenna won't extend.

    Just my $.02

Maybe the ABS self-check? (See your owner's manual. I didn't notice it until my car had about 90k on it.)
