Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 Tires - Finally a smoother 850 Ride

I have about 500 miles on the Kumho tires and I am loving it. I have always found the ride in my 850 T-5 to be overly harsh. I put in the Bilstein shocks in hopes that the digressive action would improve the ride. It did improve but only ever so slightly. I have run with the Michelin MXM and my last 2 sets were Yokohama A520s. Both these tires have great grip but I was now willing to sacrifice some grip for comfort. Based on a tirerack review http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/ecsta.jsp
I decided to give the Kumho a try. With the price at $72 a piece I figured I wasn't risking much. These tires are amazing. The ride is still firm but it is much quieter and smoother then ever. The turn-in response is not as quick as the MXM or A520 but the grip is still very good. I would recommend these to any 850 owner searching for a smoother ride. BTW - I have the 205/55-16 at 34 PSI.

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 Tires - Finally a smoother 850 Ride

I agree Gordon. I just put them on my 98 V70GLT, replacing Firestone SZ50EP at $155 a tire. I'm running 215-45ZR-17 at the max of 44 psi The Firestones are outstanding to be sure but at $89 the Kuhmos are a superior value. I also bought them based on the Tire Rack reviews. Haven't been on them in rain yet. In the dry they are reasonably grippy, quiet and smooth riding with an agressive looking tread pattern. Haven had a chance to really wring them out. So far I've quite pleased with them. I would have gone with the Ecsta MX tires, but I don't think they are available. I'd recommend them to any 70/850 owner. Kuhmo is on to something here...

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 Tires - Finally a smoother 850 Ride

I also looked at the MX but it didn't come in a 55 series profile that I wanted. I was really looking for a smoother ride but still wanted good grip. I see the size closest to your current size in the MX is 225-45YR17 for $132. As you stated, the 712 is a true bargain. No matter what the price, this is a great tire. I wish I had found them years ago. It's truly a secret that Volvo 850 owner really need to check out. Thanks for sharing your experience with them.
