Intermittent Horn 850

Hi People
Is there anyone in here with thoughts/experience of the 850 horn which will only work when it feels like it? The horn on my '97 855 will sometimes work, but only if you fiddle with the button (airbag). It seems that the contacts are bad, just like they were on my '92 945, which had to be replaced, but because of the airbag on the 855, I'm apprehensive about working on it. Any help (read fix) would help greatly.
Regards
Pat

    Intermittent Horn 850

Thanks guys for the input. I feel the problem lies in the steering wheel 'coz when I fiddle around with it, it will work for a small while, and then revert to "silence". My greatest fear in taking the assembly apart was that the air bag would deploy. Would I be best to disconnect the battery before opening these torx screws, or does it really matter?
    Regards
    Pat

I don't think it does but to be on the safe side... do that. also may help -w/o current the computer will not detect that air bag was disconnected.

There 4 terminals under the air bag, and ea. 2 are mounted on the same piece of metal. ther supposed to be a connector between those two pairs of the terminals - my car was missing it. when i bought it , the horns worked well, then started to work only if pressed on one corner (rt. lower?)
My mechanic took it apart and cleaned the terminals - did not help.
Later hes partner saw the two ends on the above mentiones metal bases that looked like they were supposed to have a contacts on them. he made up a piece of wire w/ two connectors and connected the bases - no problems since then.

***My car did not front collision damage fixed - I have no idea why the wire was missing or maybe it was not supposed to be there at all.

*** If you decide to disconnect the air bag you'll need to reset the light after you re-connect the bag again.
to remove the airbag, you have to turn the steering wheel to rt. 90 degrees and on the back of the wheel there is a torx - you need a deep/long socket ~1 inch to remove the screw. then turn wheel th left 90 from normal position an dyou'll see another screw.

I understand that there are four switch contacts in the air bag cover, approximately at the corners. These switches often fail, and commonly in the "on" position, leaving the horn blaring. This happened to me in a rainstorm on the way home one day. I thought I was being really smart to open the hood and pull the fuse for the horn. Upon getting back in the car, I discovered that the windshield wipers were on the same fuse! &^%$#(&*@

The service fix was fortunately done under warranty as it involved replacing the *entire* steering wheel assembly ($500 part). It seems that the horn switches themselves are not unit replaceable.

You may also want to verify that you don't have a relay problem, and check the connector/harness on the horns themselves, in front of the radiator.
