Transmission Flushing... Stupid Question? 850 1996

So... I have read all the posts including bay 13 on how to flush my transmission. I plan on flushing by removing the upper hose from the radiatior, but I still have one question. Which I feel stupid asking.

Does the fluid come from the hose, or the radiator?

I'm pretty sure it's the hose.

So far I have purchased:

long funnel
4 feet 3/8 id, 1/2 od clear hose
hose clamp
snap ring pliers
14 qts Mobil 1 ATF

Am I missing anything?

Thanks,

Mark

The Deed is Done... No Problems 850 1996

Piece of Cake. That had to be the easiest job I've done on the 850 so far. The whole thing took me 1 hr 10 minutes, including 15 minutes to the hardware store for the right size hose. Thanks for all the help from everyone. The snap ring pliers are a must.

The hardest part of the job was getting the Tranny dipstick in and out to check the level.

      Lessons Learned.

Clear pipe should be 1/2 in Inside Diameter.

      Total Cost

      Funnel $1.50
      ATF 14 qts $4.95 * 14 = $69.30
      Hose $3.50 + $4.50 = $9.00

      Satisfaction, Priceless.

      Thanks, Mark

        Mark,
Good Job!, not that hard after all. At least that's what I thought. As for the dip stick being a pain, I took the tube from the air cleaner to the front off. It wasn't that hard to pop it out, and it did make checking the fluid very easy. But you wont have to do that for awhile!

If this is the first flush, or you are pretty much abusive to the tranny, what you might want to do is run some cheaper synthetic ATF for a day or so, or even a week, then flush that out, and put in the Mobil 1. I ran some synthetic Motomaster Formula 1 or something ATF in my car for a day, then did my flush with AMSOIL.

I did this because I doubted that I would really get all the gunk out even if I shifted the transmission through all the positions. And I was right. Just running the cheaper synthetic for one day, it had already noticeably discoloured, most probably from dislodging gunk from the transmission.

Nice idea. I'm planning to flush my tranny in a few weeks time at 90K, and switching to synthetic at the same time.

    Mark,

Sounds like you're all set. The fluid comes out of the hose. Keep track of the clip you remove. I used the snap-ring pliers to open it just enough to slip it back. Then it slid down the length of the hose and was a bear to fish out from where it ended up on top of the trans.

When I was finished I took a couple of small hose clamps and installed them around these clips holding the hoses in place. Belt and suspenders piece of mind. I did the same with the oil cooler lines on the other side of the radiator. (Turbo only)

Should only take you 30 - 45 min. If you can, let the car sit for awhile before topping up completely. I found I overfilled mine and had to pump a quart out.

I hope you have a spare transmission line clip as they are prone to break. Also, you may have to replace the washers/seals if they leak afterward.

No fluid come from the hose and it is not a stupid question it sure was confusing me when I do mine last year....

it is a cake walk.. disconect the hole .. plug in the plastic line that you buy... and run that line into a big bucket....

turn on your engine and the fluid will come out...

in the mean time poor in new fluid .. until you see clean fluid come out ..

stop the car ... reconnect the hose ... done deal.... drive it around check the fluid again....
