Howdy from AZ!!!

I was told by my mechanic that my starter will probably poop out soon. Currently, when the car is warmed up it might take 3 or 4 times of cranking the thing to get it to turn over. Is this common for a bad starter? If so, is it fairly easy to replace the starter? I know it's right in the front of the engine block and seems fairly easy to get to. If this isn't a symptom of a bad starter, what might the problem be?

if the engine turns over quickly the starter is probably good. if the problem is the srater does not turn over or turns the engine slowly then you may look into the starter itself. How about the starter solenoid does volvo use one like other Mfgs do? they are usually the culprit not the starter.

does it turn over or not turn over untill you have tried the key 2-3 times? could be the ignition switch also.

If you mean that when turning the key to the start position, it doesn't crank the engine over at all the first few times of trying, there are other possibilities besides the starter. The starter is easily changed but one should be sure to check the "s wire" (small single post wire) at the solenoid for voltage when this occurs first. You could also have a bad starter relay, corroded terminals, PNP switch or ignition switch that could also cause a "no crank" when first trying to start the car.
If it's cranking but not immediately starting, you have another problem(s).

I would first check the fuel pressure regulator because I just replace mine after having similar hot starting problems. I have never seen a bad starter yet!

Are you saying the starter is not engaging until the 3rd or 4th time, or is it engagning and turning the engine, but the engine just doesn't start until the 3rd or 4th time? If it's simply the engine not starting, then it's not the starter. Sounds like maybe a fuel or ignition problem.
