NEED HELP ASAP!!!! 850

My 1996 850 GLT (non-turbo) wagon is dead in a Pick-n-Save parking lot. The car cranks, but won't start. It was having a similar problem last week, and by cleaning out the idle control valve, the car started fine again. Now the problem is back, and it won't even start by pressing the gas pedal or hitting the idle control valve. Please send me some ideas on how to get the car back home.

thanks,
kevin

    Fuel system? Relay maybe? 850

Happened twice to my old 240, and recently to my cousin's BMW 323: fuel pump relay. Turn on the key (but don't crank it). Do you hear the fuel pumps come on?

If you want to check the fuel pressure, I wouldn't go disconnecting the fuel filter. This would be extremely messy if you do have a working fuel pump. There is a schraeder valve (just like a tire valve) at the end of the fuel rail on the engine. You can check fuel pressure there without having to disassemble anything and getting fuel all over. Of course, many other failures could cause a no start condition, crank position sensor, cam sensor, etc. Some of these have been covered recently. Regardless, start with the basics, fuel and spark.

    UPDATE!!! ME HAPPY 850

I had some luck with pinching the tubes going to the idle control valve... so it is letting too much air in when the car is tryin to start. SO... I need to find a place that won't charge me up the A$$ for the part. Anybody know where to get these things besides the dealer? alloemvolvoparts doesn't list it on there site, but I will try to call them to get a quote. Thanks for the help!!!

just a thought - if pinching the tubes allows less air in, perhaps you have a leak in the tube priot to the pinching location, - so maybe a tube/hose replacement may be the ony need

    HI Kevin.
This does suck. I had my fuel pump go out last month with no warnings, went to the parking lot after work and nothing, it would crank all day but not start finally killed the battery. Use a 17mm open end wrench at the fuel filter under the car below the passenger side rear door, and use the wrench to pry and pop off the quick disconnect fuel line then have some one turn the key and see if fuel sprays every where, I know this is not enviromentally friendly, if there is no fuel, disconnect the electrical connection going to the fuel pump under the carpet at the cover to access the fuel pump in the back behind the passenger rear seat. Use a trouble light to see if there is power at the connection when the key is turned on. if there is power but no fuel its the pump.
I hope this leads you down the right path.
PS. I had to tow my car home with my other 850. this looked great.

Have you checked the pressure of the fuel pump? Just a thought.
