Tranny 'banged' twice after flushing. Is it normal? 850

Hi,

Today, I changed the sway bar links and flushed the tranny. No problem with the sway bar links, it's a must to get rid of the clunks and it feels great! However, After flushing the tranny, when I was switching out from Park for the first two times, it was hard to pull the knob and it made a banging sound. Then I kept the knob about five seconds in all positions and the next time I switched out from park the sound was gone. I've checked the codes thru A2&A1 and there was no code given and no dreaded arrow flashing. The tranny was operating normal prior to the incident. I'm wondering if this is normal or just one time thing. Is there anything I can do to make sure it's OK? And did anyone felt the same thing after flushing the tranny? I've used 10 qts of ATF and the fluid was nice and pink when I've stopped. The fluid level is not even 1/16" above the full line (hot). Do you think I've overfilled/lessfilled the tranny? Is there any socket different than A2&A1 to check on the transmission codes? Thanks a lot for your response.
Ihsan.

Update on Tranny 'banged' twice after flushing. Is it normal? 850

It seems that the plug I've used for the radiator hole had fallen down during the flushing letting air in the system. I don't quite know when it fell down and how much air there is in the system but I don't remember removing it after I'm finished and I don't know why I did not pay any attention to it at that time. I'm trying to find a way to let it out and compansate the amount of air with additional oil. I used 10 qts of oil while flushing and I got ~10qts back, so the amount of air should not be much. To get the air out of the system, I run the engine with the tranny fluid check dipstick off, I put the transmission lever in all positions for a couple of times for at least five seconds. I let the engine run a bit more and check the fluid level and add no more than 0.1 quart of fluid. Then I continue to run the engine and play with the shift lever, let the engine stop for some time to let things drain down for 10-15 minutes and start over again. I believe this is working, however, I'm not sure how effectivelly. The next idea I have is to completely reflush the transmission but with at least 20 quarts of fluid this time to make sure that there's no excess air in the system. Other than these I'm totaly open to any recommendations and highly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
    Ihsan

Update on Tranny 'banged' twice after flushing. Is it normal? 850

This is a new one on me. I've flushed many transmissions and never plugged anything. You sure the vacuum created by the pump didn't suck the plug into the radiator?

Update on Tranny 'banged' twice after flushing. Is it normal? 850

Yes I'm sure, because I found the plug under the car afterwards. At first I didn't want to plug it too with the same thing in my mind, however, at volvo speed web site, and haynes manual it was said that I should plug it. Maybe I've understand it wrong because of my broken english but I've juzt checked Volvo speed and it clearly says "Remove the battery and battery shelf. Remove the return hose on the control system (valve body). Install a plastic plug in
the connection on the cover (valve body) and a transparent plastic hose on the oil return hose connection. Position a
container for the oil with markings for the volume under the hose. Temporarily reinstall the battery shelf and the battery." Anyway, I'll go home and check the fluid level again if it's same as yesterday. Tomorrow I'll post another update on it.
        Thanks,
        Ihsan

That instruction was to remove the return hose (lower hose) from the transmission, not the upper hose to the radiator. Then a plastic hose is connected to the return hose to redirect the fluid coming out of the return hose (lower hose) to a basin. You do need to cover the hole on the tranny. I used a big Bounty towel to plug the hole. I believe the reason is not letting dirt going into the tranny pan. Air is going into the tranny pan anyway.

I didn't have the bang problem after flush. Bay13 instruction is to use the upper hose, and no need to plug the radiator cooler opening.

Perhaps the car was on a slight incline which had it resting against the transmission stops. Or the car had been jacked up or on a ramp for either the end links, tranny flush, or both. This would cause the clunking you describe.

I flushed my tranny and certainly never experienced any such "banging".

I'd say it is not normal at all.

however, as long as it's now shifting OK and the fluid level is good then all is probably OK.

Dunno much about tranny, but perhaps there was some kind of air pocket in the hydraulics that worked itself out.

    Good Luck with it !

Not sure. Did you check level when hot and running afterwards? Mine worked perfect. I also added BG transmission conditioner. About $17 a can.
