850 Evaporator Repair issues 850

The evaporator on my 855T recently expired, and I had it repaired. I called multiple dealers near me, and got quotes for replacement (By the way, quoted prices ranged from $1100 to $1500). I negotiated price with the closest dealer to have the work done. They claimed they would install the "evaportor kit", with a new cabin filter that "fixes" the problem (I installed the filter years ago).

After getting my car back, I notice that the parts inventory listed P/N 9171781-9 description "evaporator". I asked my independent mechanic if this was the P/N for the "evaporator kit", and he looked it up and said it was for the evaporator only. When I called the service manager back, and asked if they replaced the accumulator during the repair, he replied "we didn't need to, the system was not open long enough". My indy mechanic says that you can open the system for a minute or two (to replace an o-ring) without contaminating the accumulator, but they should have replaced it. A visual inspection of what I think is the accumulator (below the ECU housing, behing the radiator), confirms an old part.

My questions to the forum are: Is the part number above for the evaporator only, or the kit. Is it reasonable (or even possible) to replace the evaporator and have the system open for a short enough period of time to not contaminate the acculator (especially in the DC area last week). Is it standard volvo practice to replace the accumulator during the repair? (references would be great) My understanding that once the accumulator is contaminated, it no longer removes moisture from the system, which can result in the production of acids that corrode the A/C system from the inside?

    I am not a certified Volvo mechanic, but I do a lot of work on my own car. I was advised to replace the accumulator every time the A/C system is opened up. The part itself is around $80. if I remember correctly, plus approx. $100. to evac. and recharge. Due to the large expense and effort involved in replacing the evaporator, I decided to do the accumlator also. It is not that hard if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have the tools.

    The cheaper $1100 quote would be the evap only as it gets costlier to do the kit. One can do just the evap only and that's what we usually do at our shop as if we quote the higher rate (with kit), we effectively "blow the customer out of the water" as they'll call around for a cheaper price as you obviously did.
    Volvo recommends doing the kit with accumulator BUT it's not mandatory and if one is quick enough, not leaving the lines opened for more than approximately 20 minutes then it can be evacuated and in theory, the moisture should all be removed.

    IMHO, what any service writer should do is explain the details of the kit vs evap only and give the customer an educated choice but few seemingly care to do that and prefer to give the cheaper price quote in order to sell the job.

    Worst case senerio with your car is that the new evap won't last as long as it might had the accumulator also been replaced but that's pure speculation, no proof yet either way as the kits have only been around for about 1.5 yrs now.
