225/45/17's to a T-5R? 850

Hi, I'm pretty set on up-sizing my tires to at least 215/45/17's but I would really like to get 225's since they would fit the rim width and provide better grip on take off. I am aware of the possible rubbing problem that this could cause under heavy load and tight cornering, but I am not really concerned with that because I will be using them mostly at the track and not for daily driving. The problem is that there isn't much room in the wheel well for bigger tires. Does anyone know if these tires will even fit inside the wheel well? Thanks for reading.

Volvo always makes me laugh:1995 850 T-5R
240 HP
240 lb/ft. torque
0-60: 6.2 sec
1/4 mile: 14.8 sec
17" wheels...
Front wheel drive/ no manual, no limited slip? WTF!

But all is well.. The "R" is coming back 300HP+6 speed+twin intercoolers+AWD= first TRUE Volvo high performance car. I just might sell my soul to buy an S60 R!

I had 215/45/17 Bridgestone Potenza SO-3 on my 1996 850R and they were fine. No rubbing and they stuck to the road like glue. Even a 3500RPM brake torque (I know probably not a good idea) they would only chirp for a split second.

Kevin they WILL rub; but all is not lost. You could do two things: get 17x7 rims with the HIGHEST offset possible(I think for our cars it may be +40-42.) Then you can run 215/45 or 225/40 and those should be fine. Or have your fenders rolled all around a few centimeters(at a competent body shop, it would not be noticeable). If you plan to keep the car forever, the fenders may be the way to go, cause you get wider rims(like my 17x8 VIPs) or even 18s.

    Howdy -

I have a '97 850R wagon, and upgraded from the P-zeros to 215/45/17 Sumitomo HTRII Z 6 months ago, and the ride quality is greatly enhanced. The cornering ability is not as good as the 205/45/17 but it it WELL worth the trade-off.

I get very slight rub at full-lock turn, but only making it over 15-20mph. I believe it is the perfect size to the vehicle. The 225 option just seems too wide/tall. I'm considering TOYO T1 next time around, but these should last appox 25K miles, so i have time.

    Good Luck.
