Polling drivers 2001/02 T 5 with manual..pulsing on hard accelleration? V70-XC70

My 2001 T5 manual feels weird under full throttle acceleration. When I give it full throttle the power flow is not as smooth as my 94 850 turbo automatic which has a smooth fluid delivery of power. The new car feels like it has a mild case of "surging" as the rpms build up. I don't think it is missing as no fault lights come on, but is a less than lineare flow of power, kind of a mild stuttering that I can feel. Most noticable when in 2nd or 3rd gear and giving full power from say.. 1500 rpm and up.It felt the same way before and after the IPD chip mod.
How does your feel? Any thoughts? Jeff

Polling drivers 2001/02 T 5 with manual..pulsing on hard accelleration? V70-XC70

Thanks for the ideas. My 01 v70 t5 manual still has the stock exhaust with the IPD chip but the IPD sport exhaust should be here tomorrow.I hope it works and sounds good. As it is I cant hear the engine very well to gauge rpm's. It needs a bit more sound.
AS to the pulsing ideas, I don't think it is TCR cutting in and it was apparent before the chip mod. It seems to act and feel as Yannis described.
I will give an update when I get the sport exhaust on.
Speaking on the exhaust, how high will I need to lift the wagon to get the old pipes off and the new ones on? I remember on my 850 wagon that the lengh was a problem. I have no lift so it will be in the garage. Jeff

Yes... V70-XC70

Yes, mine is not very pronounced but it became evident after I had iPd flash my ECU.

I doubt it is the STC as the light never activates while it "pulses" under heavy accelration. Never does it on WOT while in 1st gear but usually when I am rolling (from 2nd) or if I am at normal speed and I am in 3rd or 4th gear.

One of my customers has experienced the same with his 2001 S60 T5 Manual, after he also had iPd flash his ECU. Then, he installed the TME sport exhaust and it went away. I wonder if it has to do with the need for a freer exhaust flow since the boost levels are higher.

I do not have the sport exhaust but at the end of next week I will have it (ordered it a week ago) and when I install it I will let you know if it went away.

Any chance it is the traction control system cutting power? Can
you turn that off on your model year?

Try dealer yet? V70-XC70

There is info about a similar complaint on many of the newer cars in the dealers networked info source (TNNs) and the cure is new software HOWEVER I don't know what that'll do to your altered ECU.

Another possibilty is a defective MAF meter, also not unusual.

Hi,

My -94 850 T5 automatic has a similar performance during a modest to strong acceleration. The pulsing occurs w/ about 1 sec. 'waves' of less acceleration. I think something in the ECU is cutting in or do I have a vacum leak or something?

Jack

Polling drivers 2001/02 T 5 with manual..pulsing on hard accelleration? C70 1999

I've noticed a similar surging with my '99 C70. Perhaps it is the variable exhaust valve timing re-optimizing for the RPMs? Is that a continuously variable process or does it perhaps occur in "steps"? Maybe it's SUPPOSED to be continuous but something is sticking?

Still, no C70R was EVER produced... C70 1999

I never disputed that it could be in the driveway but what I was referring to was that aside from the fact that anyone can slap on whatever badges on their cars, there has never been a C70R...an OFFICIAL model from Volvo.

Anyone can slap on the "R" next to their model badge...
