Greetings one and all,

I was reading back some and see that this is not a new subject. I didn't understand thou if I am having a major problem. Does this mean I have to work on the wiring behind the fuse box??? Does this mean I have no ABS when lights are on??? Does this mean the TRACS is off and the time when lights are on???

It's a 13 page SB on diagnosing and repairing the previously mentioned ABS related wiring under the fusebox. It's not in the current dealers VEN network SBs or TNNs.
Possibly someone can get this and either post it or see if Volvospeed, Bay13 cares to do that so that everyone who wants to see it can.

Just a thought here but being that Volvospeed, Bay13 also exists in a Volvo dealership and they like to post alot of info online, has anyone asked those guys about posting this old paper SB info at their site?
That'd stop the need to comment on this question everytime I see it here which is getting more often, almost like all the AC questions.

are you losing your headlights when the lights come on? If so, you need a new ignition switch. If that's not the case, you'd have to pull codes when the ABS light is on. Most likely 2 r/r wheel sensor codes and/or pump motor codes. Pump motor works when activated, needs new control module. Made in Mexico, or Ireland depending on the part number. That explains it all.

If you're from a Volvo dealership, find your old paper SBs and look for one in group 5 called "'96 ABS diagnostics" where you'll see the 12 page one I've previously discussed here. It's not posted in VEN so you won't find it there.
It was a common problem and the repair apparently wasn't performed on all '96 850s so the wiring problem still exists.

It's got quite a good explanation of the possible causes - as well as instructions to fix. It did not address however the wiring fix on 96 year models.

If both are going on and off at the same time, this would be consistent with an ignition switch failure.

Yes, you will not have ABS when that light is on. And yes, your TRACS will not work when that light is on. On '96 models there is an apparent wiring fix (no one has posted exactly what the dealer does). I am going to the dealer tommorow for my 48K km major tuneup, and I will enquire about the "wiring fix", as i have a '96 850 as well.
