Found solution to sound problem 850

Hope i'm not just saying what everyone knows already, but here goes. Using the fader on my stereo, I noticed that the front just sounded horrible when compared to the back. Listening closely, it was clear the tweeters were not working. I visited Circuit City and was offered a nice set of 5.25" Infinity's or Polk's for $179, including the door speakers and the separate tweeters for the dashboard.

Visited the crutchfield store (it is a store/catalog returns outlet) and they had the same ones from Circuit City, but for $50 more, and the salesperson insisted there was no way I could cram anything bigger than 4" speakers in my doors without "major modification". Bummer. (of course I later read on here that this is crap).

On a whim I searched the archive on here, and found out about the magnet-falling-off problem. I took off the tweeters and found that is what happened, oddly on both sides (it is a '95). I found one magnet stuck to the passenger airbag (safe?), but the driver's side one was more difficult. I ended up taking off the dashboard panel in front of the knees and it was right there.

I glued them back on, and now the system sounds great. Once again brickboard saves the day.

Still the upgrade to Polk 5 1/4" component set for door and dash would probably provide a smoother more natural sound than the stock speakers. If money is no object, I would get the speaker upgrade. I have done this and the stereo is easily 30% better.

James,

How hard is it to take off that dashboard panel by your knees. I've had the same experience as you with the tweeters - found the passenger, not the driver!

Thanks.

It is simply three torx screws across the front. Then gently wiggle and pull towards you; the back is held up by sliding into supports near the firewall. The magnet was simply sitting somewhere near the left side.

It was a two-fold repair for me because the dashboard piece was sagging, apparently someone didn't slide one of the supports in place during a previous repair.

The rear deck speakers suffer the same fate, check those as well, for "added" sound.
