service manual S40-V40

Can anyone recommend a good service manual for an '00 S40? I want to try to replace all the parts for the 30k service (air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs, etc...) myself.

One question- what's involved in replacing the spark plugs? Is it just a matter of unscrewing the old ones and screwing in the new ones? Are there special tools or procedures involved?

thanks
David

IPD has the Haynes UK manual covering 96 thru 2000 european models. I got a copy and its good enough for anything you might need to do until Haynes or Chiltons offers one for the US.....probably another two years or so.

All you need for spark plug replacement is a torx head set (to remove the engine plastic cover) and ratchet/extension/plug socket for removal. A torque wrench will be good to have. New plugs are tightened to 25Nm, or 18lb/ft.

      Hi Mormit,
I have been looking at torque wrenches in the range of 0-75lbs, possibly to do the spark plugs at 18lbs. But they tend to be very long, one was about 17" long. Which just seemed to long for the job. I ended up taking the reccomendations of the spark plug mfgs, of how much to turn after the washer hits the head. I would prefer a torque device, just uncertin which one for that job.
      Thanks,
      Craig

Haven't changed my plugs yet so I can't say if a typical torque wrench would be difficult to use. Only done two oil changes so far. Haven't even taken the plastic engine cover off yet.....might just do that this weekend to be nosey and see how hard the plugs are to reach.

Access is good, once the plastic covers are removed. You must then remove the 2 coils that sit on top of the 2 plugs to the rear of engine. Once they are removed plug access is normal. They are a ways down. I had no problems.
          Good luck,
          Craig

How do you know if you've tightened to "25Nm, or 18lb/ft." and what happens if you don't get it right?

Can you scan or photocopy the service manual pages describing how to change the spark plugs? I think some diagrams might help me. I would be happy to reimburse you in any way.

You'll have to acquire a torque wrench, you can rent them at most auto parts stores, or you can purchase a 3/8" drive torque wrench for $30-$50.00.
if you overtighten the spark plugs you can strip the threads on the cylinder head.

Ok I think I'm going to have the dealer change the spark plugs.

Two other things for the 30k service:

          1) can someone tell me how to change the cabin (pollen) filter? I couldn't find anything in the owner's manual.

          2) can someone tell me how to change the air filter? I couldn't find anything in the owner's manual except a picture of the location.

          thanks!

Send me your email...you can get mine from my profile. I'll send you the pages on plugs, air filter, and cabin filter.

These are not difficult to do. Yes, if you really crank the plugs in too tight you can strip the threads but I did my plugs by hand with no torque wrench several times on previous cars before getting a torque wrench. I think they are 15-20 bucks at Autozone....nice to have on hand in the long run.

There are no paper shop manuals for any 2000 or newer Volvos. no Chiltons, no Haynes, (Yet). but, you can buy access to an online shop manual from Volvo. you can do that via an online subscription for a small one time fee of $1500.00(U.S.$) and an annual renewal fee of $100.00 . so until Haynes or Chiltons decides to publish their own shop manuals, we are out of luck.
