2003 V70 prices GREATLY reduced!!!
I just calculated all 2003 prices for my sales force...I am totally amazed how much the V70 prices have been reduced.
For example:
MSRP on a V70 base with auto tranny and Climate package is $30,025!!! (incl. destination charge)
MSRP on a V70 2.4T w/ Climate & Premium packages is $34,620!
MSRP on an XC70 w/ Premium & Touring packages is...$37,920!!!
MSRP on a V70 T5 w/ Geartronic, Climate & Premium packages is $38,220!
This is a HUGE price reduction. I guess all wagon lovers will have to "thank" the XC90 for this big break!

When I first read your message I thought the prices you were stating were going to be the BEFORE prices and then you were going to tell us the discounted price. I thought the base model V70's went for about $27k. Guess I am still living under a rock, haven't looked at the new Volvo's or been to a Volvo dealer in a long time.

sssssssssssssssssssssssssss......splat! (that was the sound of my 2002 V70's resale value plummenting.) Anyways, from what I understand about these Volvo "price reductions" is that it really isn't a price reducton at all, because equipment that was previously standard will now be an extra cost option, so essentially it is nothing more than a shell game. the car will cost less because you get less ! am I right about that Yannis?

Mansey,
the '03 models will not have LESS content. Actually, there are some additional standard features and/or packages have been enhanced. For example:
PREMIUM PACKAGE for the 2.4 models now includes simulated wood trim and Electronic Climate Control! TOURING PACKAGE for the same model includes the Interior Air Quality System. The CLIMATE PACKAGE for the same model includes the Rainsensor. They will also let you add Navigation System, DSTC and Volvo On call Plus for the same model, something that was impossible previously.
In the 2.4T models, simulated wood trim is standard now whereas before you had to have Premium Package. They will also let you add Navigation System and Volvo On call Plus for the same model plus Audiomax, something that was impossible previously.
For the AWD models, the engine has increased in both displacement and HP; from 2.4L to 2.5L and from 197 HP to 208 HP. Haldex AWD is standard.
So, I hardly call this decontenting. The price reduction has nothing to do with "slower sales" as "Phil" below is indicating. It is a strategic move because of the XC90. The XC is one (if not the best) of the best selling wagons in the entire country!

"no decontenting" you say? well then , that is GREAT news !(but frankly, I just can't believe it) seems too good to be true.
YANNIS: how much lower on average? LET'S say for a base V70(2.4) with auto, touring pkg, premium pkg and cold weather pkg. QUOTE ME 2002 prices versus 2003 PRICES FOR THE SAME CAR.
now if Volvo would only lower the price of the ONLINE SHOP MANUAL ACCESS........

What do you mean "you can't believe it"? I just laid out all the ADDITIONAL features...nothing else has been taken away...
Base V70s have been decreased (on average) by $1,700 while higher end models like the XC70 2.5T AWD have been decreased by about $2,500.

Why do I say that "I can't believe it"? because I know that at Ford Motor Company, in product Development, there is a mandate to take $700.00 of cost out of each and every Ford Model, without a reduction of the vehicles MSRP by the way.
so these Volvo price reductions are just just a bit of a shock to me because it is just the opposite of what is going on at Ford Motor Company.
Now the $700.00 cost reduction is supposed to be on items that would be not be perceptible to the customer. i.e using a lower cost glove box hinge assembly, things that supposedly will not affect the vehicle's quality or the customers perception of decontenting or reduction of quality.
So perhaps this is what Volvo will be doing for the 2003 Model year?

You can still take $700 out of the cost without changing the content
since the content is not 100% of the cost of building a car. Change
the way you design them, better manufacturing techniques, make the car
easier to build with less labor, easier assemble and ship, fire a few
middle managers, etc.

I agree with you Ray, however the $700.00 cost reduction goal is specifically for the cost of the parts, components. but as I said in my previous post,it would be on parts that would not degrade quality or the customers perception of quality. i.e using a lower cost glovebox hinge assembly.

I've notice that they typically de-content the cars, but I suspect that Volvo and parent Ford are in enough trouble that they wouldn't dare try it this time. Or if they do, they're dumber than I thought.

In spite of the recession it's interesting that BMW sales have been going up, not down and they've also held the line on prices.

Well I sure hope that they don't de-content the Volvo models but I am a little leery, if what Yannis is saying is true, because unless they (Volvo,Ford) are not de-contenting the cars, the only way they can hope to make profits is by increasing volume and trust me, it's all about making profits.
I believe that they are going to do a little of both , a little de-contenting which lowers the price and makes Volvo more affordable to a wider demographic, which in turn will lead to increased sales volumes.
or perhaps Volvo will offer a "Free Ford Focus with every purchase of a 75th anniversary Volvo S80.*
