Flashing orange dashboard light on cold start 850

when i start '93 850 a orange dashboard light with an arrow flashes and it seems that the car starts from the fourth gear or something like that.
the light goes out after 10 minutes and everything is fine.
I'm new with Volvo.

It sounds like your car is starting in Winter Mode. See if you can change it to normal mode. Check your tranny fluid also.
also check your codes for the transmission. Its probably not functioning right

xtwister means to push the 'S' or 'E' buttons next to the shifter (instead of 'W'). These stand for Sport, Economy and Winter. Does the light go out? If not, it might be as RayN says, the PNP switch. Go to http://www.volvospeed.com/bay13.htm for detail instructions.

This sounds like the PNP switch on the tranny has failed. It is
in limp-home mode and is locked in third gear.
Very, very common problem. For details see:

have you ever done one of these PNPs Do you really need to buy the alignmwent tool from Volvo?
