ECC question 850 1993

My wifes '93 850 130k/mi developed a problem where the heater blower works only on high and will not shut off. Also, the led lights for the "A/C off" and the "Rec" do not work nor do that function (if the A/C button is toggled the ac doen't start). After leaving the car at an independent shop for three days. They said it was the ECC and that the whole unit (controls and all) needed replaced. I am not aware of any fault codes and I'm confident that my wife would have told me about them if they were present. According to the shop the part costs $700. I'm wondering if anyone else had a problem similar in nature to this one? Another Q is does anyone know where I can purchase this part at signaficiantly less than $700? Since the independent shop charged me a rate of $65per/hr to diagnose the problem, I'm attempting to locate and replace the unit myself.

    ECC question 850 1994

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a bad resistor, which is located next to or near the blower motor behind the glove box. Pretty accessible after removing the glove box. That part was about $100 if I remember correctly. Although when I checked for fault codes the two showing did indicate a problem with the blower motor. I don't have my code book handy. Hope this guides you away from a $700 bill.
