auto transmissions 850 1997

I just read something in the paper about automatic transmissions and I wonder if anyone can explain it. In a mechanic's column, it was suggested that after starting one's car on a cold day to put the car in drive first and let it roll forward about a foot before selecting reverse to back out of the garage. This is supposed to be easier on the transmission. Anybody know why?

...but harder on your front bumper and the back wall of your garage? Yes, I'd love to hear the explanation for this one, too!

Hey Phil, does that tower strut brace do anything for you that you can feel??

I don't know why but I can't wait to hear the answer to this one.
