S 70 GLT: Noise from front left end when turning - bad strut or joint??? S70

I have a VOLVO S70 with approx. 120K on it. The car runs well and I havent had any major issues with it. Lately I have heard a noise from the front end (left) of the car. It is mainly when I start the car in the morning and drive out of my parking lot. When I turn left/right I can hear a scraping sound (sounds like a bad strut). Somebody told me that it can be either the struts or somekind of joint (not sure which one) that is going bad and needs to be replaced.

Any ideas or suggestions on what it might be? Are struts or joints a challenge to replace on this model? If so, what is the easiest way to check it out to determine the root-cause of the problem?

Also, where is a good place on the web to purchase VOLVO parts at a good price?

Thanks in advance,

CAL

You may also want to check the power steering fluid level. In my 850 that sound was because of low fluid level. The moment I topped it, it went away.

Could be the shock bushings, the connecting links for the anti-roll bar, or the control arm ball joint. Pull the wheel off and check them and see if there is any play in them.

One of the best places I have found for parts is Volvo of Houston
1-800-468-0041 they are 25-50% off original parts. I have used the many times. They don't have much tech help but they will sell you the parts.

Front link rod ends (a/k/a swaybar endlinks) S70

The bushings in these go quickly, and the symptoms include a squeaking sound, or a little thump. It's a DIY repair and the parts are cheap.

Help with mystery noise. S70

Hi david,

Maybe you can help me with this one.

As you know, I replaced the connecting links on both sides. The anti-sway bar bushings seem okay and the bolts are torqued to spec. The steering rack bolts are torqued to spec. I have virtually no free play when testing 3-9 or 12-6 positions on either front wheel.

Yet when I turn the steering wheel left on reversing (@ 15 dgrees from straight ahead) there is a "sproing" pop from the right (?) side. It only happens once and I notice no other problems with handling, etc.

I know that it is not the steering stops. Is it a bad spring seat or what?

Thanks,

Bryan
