Hi:
Is there a way to retrieve a radio code with the radio still in the car ? I don't have the code and need to disconnect the battery....

You should be able to call the dealer. Have your VIN number handy and if the guy isnt a jerk he will give you the PIN number over the phone and wont charge you for it.
Worst scenero is going to the dealer with your ownership.

But first look through the owners manual or warranty book. The previous owner may have written it in there. 4 digit code.

and doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of the code?

I think it is a good idea that the dealer should make you come down to the dealership to prove that you own the car, and the radio.

Simple answer...No
The VIN through a dealer will give you the code
