1999 S70, Cold start sometimes dies, second start runs great! S70

Often if I cold start my volvo in the morning I'll get engine chugging and then it will die. The second start the vehicle runs perfect.

There is no smoke coming from the tailpipe during either start and I just had a tune-up 10K miles ago.

Any ideas? Dealership is stumped but they want to do another tune up and of course charge me for it. Pulled spark plugs and they don't look fouled.

    If anyone is interested S70

If anyone is interested the idea of putting the key in position II for 4 or 5 seconds and then starting the car worked perfectly. Car starts fine every time now.

On my MY 2000 S70 this was caused by the multi-pin connector to the ECU. The dealer said that oxidation builds up on the contacts. He cleaned the plug with contact cleaner, and the problem has been gone since last winter.

My '99 does something similar and I attributed it to the fact that I was not leaving it in the start position long enough. Once I started doing that the problem has been alleviated.

So let me get this straight. You just hold the key in the start position longer than usual? Start Position being the key position in which the starter is cranking? How much longer? Just a couple seconds or a split second?

      Thanks for the help!

        Worried,

I have had the same thing for 2 years now with cold morning starts.

Try this : Turn your key to the II position so you see your dash
lights come on for about 3 seconds[till pump or whatever that hum finishes]. Then back up the the 0 position for 2 secs and then turn key to
the II position again for about 6 chimes. Then turn key fully to start.

For some reason this has fixed my hard start problem. If I still have
this problem after my 30K tune up I will then bark up another tree but
till then this procedure makes my car Puurrr on cold starts.

Do any pros out there know why my little procedure seems to works?
Maybe i'm priming the fuel system or something!!!

I also heard that cleaning the ECU connector contacts with cleaner
can also clear up hard starts when other troubleshooting has failed.

        Hope This Helps!!

My thought is your trick gives the fuel pump more time to pressurize the system. You probably do not need to go throught the whole on and off routine, just leave the key in position #2 for 30 secs before starting. Why you are now have the problem when it is cold, the battery is putting outless juice (fuel pump goes slower), the fuel is cold and more dense (also making the pump run slower), the fuel system lost pressurazation because when you last ran the car the fuel lines were warm (when they cool off the pressure in the lines goes down, hence the pump has to work harder to make up for lost pressure) and finaly the engine management system is using more fuel, running the engine rich (to warm up quicker). Note a new battery may help solve the problem.

            Good call Rob,

As soon as I get a few extra bucks I am going to get
an Interstate Megatron. Hope my Volvo OEM lasts a little
            longer.

            TY
