replacing aux drive belt 99 S80-T6 S80

I was wondering how difficult it would be to replace the auxiliary drive belt. I recently changed the spark plugs and inspected the belt, it looked ok. Is it necessary to replace it anyway for the 60K mile check? Also how often should I flush the coolant, I had that done 13 thousand miles ago. I am also considering getting the tranny fluid flushed and replaced, does anyone have experience with Jiffy Lube? Thanks for any advce in advance! Dave Berger

    Dave;

    Regarding coolant and transmission flush:

    I think you will find that your owners manual does not require flushes for these two, but inspections.

    However I just attended some lectures by one of the TV Car Advisors and he is recommending flushes for coolant, transmission, power steering, brakes, and engine oil, at about every 2 yrs or 24K. Also, he recommends MOA, and gas additives.

    His reasoning is that the late model cars are very expensive to repair so preventive maintainance is indicated.

    Also, the running temperatures and pressures are higher which degrade the fluids faster. If the fluid turns color or smells then it's too late.

      Rich, please excuse my ignorance, but what is MOA?

        keefus;

        Motor Oil Additive(MOA); e.g. "BG Advanced Formula MOA" (if you are familiar with BG products, which are apparently very popular, although I never heard of them until a few weeks ago when I attended lectures by the "Motorweek" TV show mechanic).
        I found "MOA" listed on my bill each time the Volvo Dealer changed the oil.I puzzled over that item because I didn't know what it meant.

    The serpentine belt is not a bad job, really, and should be done at 60k. I got a serpentine belt tool at Sears for $20 bucks that worked like a charm (long flat bar with a 3/8 drive stud and a 14mm crow's foot).

    You will have to remove the right front wheel and peel back the plastic wheel well cover to expose the round plate that covers the crankshaft pulley (this has to come off to get the belt on and off). This plate is secured by four 14 mm bolts. They don't come off easy...I had to borrow an impact wrench, turn the air pressure to max, and put a torch on the nuts for about 1.5 minutes each before they would come off! Once you get them off, it's pretty easy. Be sure to make a sketch of the belt routing before you remove the old belt.

    Got a new belt from oemvolvoparts.com. It cost around $35, and is made by Contintental (oem manufacturer). Volvospeed.com has a nice procedure for FWD Volvos serp belt change that includes some pictures.

      BTW, you can do the tranny flush yourself with a 3/4" to 1" ID hose, a graduated container, and around 16 qts ATF. The filter is pretty much optional, however, why risk the possibility of introducing dirt by dropping the pan?

      When I did this recently, I disconnected the upper tranny cooler line, and attached the hose to the metal fitting on the rad. The fluid was very dark and burnt-smelling. I flushed with 8 qts standard Dexron III ATF (2 qts out, two qts in until fluid drained bright red). Then I flushed with 10 qts Mobil1 synthetic ATF (just to get a good exchange of fluid). Tranny shifts smoother, quieter, I am told it may run cooler as well. Worth the 30 minutes and $70 for what I got.

    It's not a fun job and the harmonic balancer must be removed or you'll never do it. It's a 60K part and if neglected and it breaks, it CAN take out the timing belt too which will then be a very costly repair bill.
    I wouldn't have Jiffy Lube do ANYTHING besides an oil change.
    The trans is a GM trans so besides flushing it, there's also a filter that should be replaced as well. It's not mentioned in your book but if were my car, I'd flush the trans AND replace the filter too.
