hands-free car phone kit for the V40 S40-V40

Hi all,

I have a 2000 V40, and want to install a hands free cell phone system. I know Volvo makes a whole kit, but the dealer wants about $1500 for it (installed), and it wouldn't support any Sprint PCS phones. I have a Sprint PCS Samsung phone, and bought the Samsung hands-free kit.
The main issue is: how to best install the different components.
As for the phone itself, Volvo makes a palstic part that looks like an extension of the dash board, which attaches to the dashboard to the left of the glove box, and the phone is mounted on it. I got the part, but it came with no installation instructions, and I do not want to drill holes in the dash where there shouldn't be any. Does anybody know the correct way to mount that part?

As for the other components, I was thinking of mounting the speaker under the seat, the microphone in the top center of the windshield, with the wire going under the side panel, and the hub somewhere under the passenger side kick panel. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Ron

rcapsi,

I have posted extensive and reasonably simple instructions for installation of the Vovo headset using inexpensive and easily available components.

I did this on my S70 and also have a Sprint (TP) phone. Actually any phone with a 2.5 cm jack will work.

Please refer to the OCT index. Go to page no. 7 and find the post "Phone and Backup Sensor S80-1999. It has a date of October 3d. My second post to Gary provides the instructions.

The headset from Volvo and a new cover (if you have leather) is all you need to buy from them. The dealers are stuck with these and you should be able to strike a great bargain (<$200.US).

Please let me know if you require assistance.

Bryan

Bryan,

Very useful instructions, thank you.
I have the Samsung SCH3500 PCS phone, and I got the Sansung Hands free kit for this phone ($199 retail) for $10 on eBay. The kit includes a smart cradle (detects when you pull the phone off it, and disconnects the speakers, for privacy, the phone also shifts to hands free mode when it detects the cradle), an amplifier, a microphone and a speaker. The big challenge is how to combine this kit and the volvo to make an unobtrusive, functional system.

For mounting the phone, I think the best solution is the metal mount that mounts under the climate control trim, sold for $40 by Pro-Fit (http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/Adobe/VO-55-00.pdf for installation instructions, or http://www.virtual-vendor.com/v3/100028/www/products/100001/vo55%2D00.html for a quick picture). It is very compact and functional, and leaves no scars if the phone is removed.

As for the speaker and microphone, I like your suggestion of modifying the Volvo headrest. since I do not need an additional amplifier (it's part of the Samsung system) I think all I will need to do is cut off the DIN connector and connect plugs that would fit the jacks for the microphone and speaker on the Samsung amplifier! The big question is if this headrest is campatible with the V40 headrests. I know that the Volvo phone system for the V40 does not use a headrest for a speaker, but rather integrates the phone into the streo system. there is one way to find out - to visit the dealer...

Hello ... $1500 are you nutz. Why don't you just get a $20 earpiece with a mic, doesn't that work about the same. Well even if it is 10 times worst than the system from Volvo ... it certainly isn't worth $1470 difference.
