Another way to replace top motor mount? 850 1995

The top motor mount is going on my '95 850 GLT (117K miles). I have red a number of messages on how to replace it. It seems that every body changed that mount without removing the bracket it's attached to. I wonder if it would be easier to remove the bracket first, and then change the mount - no mess/rubber on the engine, easier to align the new mount. I am going to use the original volvo rubber bushing/mount. If anyone in fact did remove the bracket, post a message if it was worth the trouble (removing the bracket).
Thnks.

Do you take the whole mount off to cut it out? I've always
wondered where the metal shavings go (just don't like the idea of them
dropping down into the engine compartment -- probably OK, but it still
would bother me).

I did mine on my 98. I pressed it out using a small press I had
on hand and a piece of PVC pipe (a 3 inch cap as I recall). Pressing
the new one in was a bit more work since I had to sort through a
couple boxes of plumbing parts and long bolts and nuts to jury rig
something that worked. There was at least one trip to the hardware
store during all this for some large washers. Now, I also have a 95
so figuring out how to do this was worth the time since both cars
use the same upper mount and it is basically a wear item. But, if I
had one car I'd be inclined to let a dealer/mechanic do it.

I never did consider remvng te whole backet and doing it on the bench.
That would have made it much easier.

Another way to replace top motor mount? 850 1995

Hello Yuri, I just went through this. I have a 99V70 awd and the rubber was cracked through. Dlr. sold me the bushing, $10-11 as I recall. I removed the bracket from the engine because it would be easier to press the new one in. I had to remove the 8 torx screws to remove the two plastic valley covers, easy. Then the 4 (14mm)bolts that hold the bracket to the head, easy also. Because the mount was separated, I removed the center piece and used a hacksaw blade to carefully cut through the O.D. of the outer pressed in piece. You can then just push it out with your hand. It cut through very quickly because it is made of Plastic, (this surprised me), not steel. I usually always clean the bore of any hole that I am going to press someting into.
The bushing that the dlr gave me was the wrong one. The new bushing that he gave me just dropped rt. through the hole. Called dlr., he finds out that somewhere in '99 they went to a non-replaceable bushing. He has to order the whole bracket w/bushing... oh well. The new one has the bushing O.D. which is made of plastic also. (I scraped on the O.D. to tell)
The second time I did the job it took only 20 minutes, start to finish. The Dlr. parts guy says, that the one that has the replaceable style bushing is, and I quote, "impossible to do on the car"... too tight a fit he says, you need a press to get the new one in properly and oriented with the arrow up. BTW, on the new one the arrow was not 90 deg. to the base mounting surface, it was pointing at about 11 o'clock, relative to the base surface, due to the tilt of the engine. Picky, those Swedes. HTH, Tom

Thanks a lot, Tom. On 850 the bushing is also at ~11 o'clock position, which, I think, has to do w/ directions of the forces during acceleration so that the max. resistance is applied to the motor.
I did have a couple of occasions when things were much easier to replace if taken out of the car.
Yuri

I have the "old-style" replaceable bushing and simply took a drift and a hammer and tapped around the periphery of the OD. Each wack moved the bushing about a 32nd of an inch. In five minutes I had the thing out of there--no hacksawing. Pressed the new one in with a threaded rod and some large sockets.

Hi Yuri,

Do yourself a favour and take the car to a workshop.
I tried every advice that has been posted on this
forum, and the operation took me 4 hours and two
bushings.

Dmitri

One piece of advice when trying to press in new bushings is to properly lubricate them. If they're rubber, the typical suggestion is glycerin. This stuff is easily found at your local Walgreens in the "personal lubricants" section. The brand name I've used for other press-in situations is "Astro-Glide"; it's also water-soluble, so it will eventually dissipate.
