Steering wheel shedding, whats the deal? V70-XC70 1999

My 99 V70 has this shedding steering wheel problem. The leather disintegrates in my hands when there is high humidity. The leather just crumbles off. What the deal with this? Anyone had this problem?

Steering wheel shedding, whats the deal?

This is a well known problem on models with the light color int. I dont know why it dont happen to the graphite colored ones.
Volov NA knows all about it, and In just about EVERY case I have heard of the dealer replaced the entire wheel on a "one time only" deal. This was even with cars that were out of warranty. At least thats whats done around here.
Just push your dealer to replace the dam thing!

    good luck

Because this is such a well known problem(in the taup colored models)I would talk to your local Volvo dealer to see if they can do anything. Just tell them that you know this is a wide spread problem, and you do know that Volvo NA has covered the repair on other cars.

Steering wheel shedding, whats the deal? C70 1999

Had the same problem on my C70...well, at least on the top-half of the steering wheel. I noticed that after a day out in the sun, the leather feels a little mushy and then when you rub on it, it comes off.

As for as the bottom-half of the steering wheel goes, I had some dirty marks...so I decided to use Lexol Leather cleaner on it. After a couple swips of the Lexol and a dry cloth, the leather just came off. That was kinda wierd. It got to the point where I was seeing black underneath.

If you car is still under warranty, I would take it in and tell the dealer about it. Hopefully, if they are nice enough (as was mine in a rare instance), they will do a procedure call "re-dye." After the re-dye, the wheel should look brand new.
