Replace EGR Valve? '94 850

Check engine lamp came on for the first time after years of owning my '94 850.
Pulled the code 241 which is "EGR - flow to low". I erased the code, lamp is off and today the lamp came back aon again. I know a leak in the hose attachment could also trigger the code but I'm thinking if this problem persists, I should just go ahead and replace the EGR Valve which looks simple enough to do. What do you think?

Be sure to check all the vacuum hose elbows first. I got the same code and an elbow was the culprit. If the elbows are okay, the EGR valve probably just needs cleaning. There's a hole in that gets filled with crud. Bay 13 has good info on removing and cleaning the EGR valve.

Thanks John for the reply, I have already printed off the instructions from Bay 13. The hole you mentioned, is that the one found in the throttle body? The EGR seems like a pain to remove...plus I need new gaskets to the job.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of. (Had to go back and review Bay 13 to refresh my memory). The valve wasn't that hard to remove, but the back 8mm bolt can be a bear. I bought new gaskets for the EGR valve and throttle body, but probably could had gotten away re-using the old ones.

          Replace EGR Valve? Not likely.

            early, hit wrong button.
Assuming vacuum hoses are OK, the main reason why one gets that code with higher mileage engines is that the hole in the intake manifold just above the EGR valve clogs. With the EGR valve and throttle base removed, it's not hard to unclog that hole. One can test the EGR valve and solenoid with a vacuum test guage if need be.

              Herb,
A lot of folks seem to think the EGR valve is usually fine and cleaning everything usually does the trick. I'm going to get-in-there this weekend, clean the flametrap and throttle body while I'm at it and see if I can clear out any deposits in the intake maniflold. I'm going to give the exhuast pipe (the one threaded into the valve) a tap with a hammer to see if it free's up any carbon/dirt buildup as well....maybe I'll get lucky. If the warning lamp (code) persists then I will remove the valve completely and do a proper cleaning job. It just means a trip to the dealership for the gaskets at a busy time of year when I have better things to do!!
