98 S70 oil on back of engine.

Took the 70 in for check engine light and temp sensor and thermostat
were replaced. The shop indicated the back of the engine was oily. Wanted
$100.00 to put the dye in the oil and find the leak. I declined for
the moment as I have noticed a bit of oil sheen on the driveway after it rains.
However, no noticable drips. I have watched the oil a couple of weeks like every
day and see no apparent drop in levels.
I know it doesnt take much oil to produce a sheen in water so I am thinking
this must be a very slight leak.
I understand that the (oil pan screws?) have a maint notice out due to leaking.
So does this just mean they should be retorqued? New seal? new screws? Warping of the pan?
Any insight appreciated... also any other "common" leak spots?

TIA

98 S70 oil on back of engine.

From TSB 2210014:

On some vehicles oil may drip form one or all of the three screws at the front edge of the oil pan. If oil drip is occuring at any of the mentioned screws, the screws must be replaced with new screws with thread sealant, P/N 981684-4. This service bulletin describes how to install new screws with thread sealant. New screws have been introduced in production from the chassis numbers listed here.

Model Factory Chassis No.

S70 2 517297-
V70 2 478524-
V70 AWD 2 478524-

There is another TSB (2210023) on oil leaks from the oil pump. The oil pump
cover screws are replaced. This leaks up at the front near
the front left tire.

98 S70 oil on back of engine.

In addition to what Bill said about the oil return line on the turbo, the oil filler cap gasket hardens and oil pools on the top of the engine and eventually works its way down the back of the engine.

You can verify this by taking the plastic cover off the top of the engine ... if there's oil sitting in areas on top of the head, that's likely the culprit. A new gasket is only a few bucks at the dealer. Many change them every 10K or so just to keep them fresh.

I had your exact symptoms ... did both the filler cap gasket and the turbo oil return line and now it's dry as a bone.

If your car is a non-turbo, clean the flame trap first before looking for other leaks.

Good Luck,

Keith

Forgot that bit of info. Not a Turbo.

I will check the gasket and flame trap. Have you heard of this factory
notice for 98's? I understand that the oil pan screws come loose or do they
fail in some way?

AAhhh to many projects! ;-)

Thanks for your input!

Is your car a turbo?

From Bay 13:

By far the most common place for oil to leak. The parts are only a few bucks. If your car is NOT a turbo, scratch this idea.
