VOLVO 850 turbo (94) transmission question, Pleas Help. 850 1994

I am going to replace my transmission on a 94 850 turbo, it went bad after a cros country drive and now it slips a lot. I am going to spend a lot of money on it so as long as I am doing so, do you think i can put something besides a stock 4 speed automatic in it. Like a 5 speed automatic with "tiptronic" (like on Audi, ware you can select the gear manualy or let the computer do it). I am just looking at my options. I do not whant to install a full manual as my friend has to drive it too. I am going to do upgrades to the engine later on to so I would want somthing that can handle additional power.

Thank you very much for any help that you can provide in this matter,

Bogdan R.

As Ben said, there isn't much option there.
What does your transmission fluid look like? Have you ever changed it?
If it is original and/or looks dark, you might try to flush it before swapping it. Look for the instructions--will take a case of transmission fluid and a bit of time. If it works, you will have saved a bundle. If it doesn't, you'll have wasted about $20 and some time.

VOLVO 850 turbo (94) transmission question, Pleas Help. 850 1994

I tried doing a flash, it did not work, but it is true all it years the car was serviced by volvo, even before I bought it and no one at volov though of flashing it even ones during its 50k run. I brought it to volvo before going from Chicago to LA and spend a good 1500 replacing brakes, fluids and other stuff. But they did not even look at the transmission, so you can see how I am really pissed at volvo right now. What happened is on the way somewhare in Calorado it just stooped, the car was shaking, engine was at red line but it was not moving. I head to flash it in Colorado to even make it to LA, but it is really badly burned, atlest the turqconverter is.

I was wondering, if I just replase the turqconverter and not the how trany, do you think it will solve the problem, guys ad AMCO looked at it and side that it looks ok inside and most likely it is a turqconverter, but it seems to me that one part went bad, all the gears will go soon too.

Any way I would really appreciate your help in the matter,

      Bogdan

I would not consider anything except replacement with a remanufactured tranny, and the only source I know of is Volvo. I certainly wouldn't let AAMCO learn about Volvo transmissions on mine. Trying to do it piecemeal just doesn't make sense when you take the labor into account--less labor with a swap than there is with a removal, pull apart, replace and cross your fingers!

Well as it stands right now, a turqconverter would be 800 wile a full trany will be 2200, so I am leaning toward the first one. I well see it AAMCO will guaranty the job for at leas 3 years, if they do I will go with that. I dont know how else to get to do the trany. AAMCO are a well known company, and after the work vovlvo did on my car I do not trust them, al least in Chicago, i know form experience that they do really bad job, do not fix, just replase things and charge way more then any one else. For example my left mirror began to shake, they tolled me it head to be replaced for 500, I fixed it my self for $5 and 10minuts of work. So i am defiantly will not go with a local volvo dealer.

If you can recommend any good mechanics in LA aria, I would be really thankful,

          Bogdan

You don't have "realistic" options IMHO and even if you were determined enough and willing to spend ALOT of time and money to try using the S60 5 speed, in the long run I highly doubt it'd be of much, if any advantage.
A OEM replacement Volvo trans from a dealer runs about $1,600 plus installation, 10 hours labor (book time) and has a 1 year, unlimited mileage parts warranty.
