Switch to synthetic fluids at 55K ?

Hello all-

Just purchasing a '96 855 Turbo w/ 54K for my wife. I am aware most of you are using synthetic fluids on your turbo equiped cars and I have used it on my 911 Carrera since new. My limited knowledge is that it is not advised to switch to synthetic fluids late in a vehicle's life- which I don't think applies to a 54K car. Can I get some feedback about switching over to Mobil 1 15-50w at 54K?

Thanks

Switching is good, viscosity not so!

I recommend using a good engine flush, such as made by AMSOIL or BG. (Yep, I'm biased, having used and sold AMSOIL for over 25 years). If you don't, or won't, flush, then watch for any sign of sudden increase in oil consumption. If you see this, change filter and top off. If the first batch of oil gets nasty looking, you might drain it at 4-5,000 miles.

With a good synthetic, there is no need for you to go to such a heavy viscosity.
Any xW-30 will give you more than enough protection, along with reduced drag.

that is a very good move and your car will thank you for it. be sure to flush the engine with a good flush (like amsoil, etc) before changing. also, i would use a 5-30 at most.
regards

I did with my 97 GLT @ 56K mi. No leaking, no problems. Just a quieter engine with less worries. I'm @ 86K now.
