Bevel gear fill plug, serial number V70-XC70 1998

Hi,

I own a 96 850 Turbo Wagon, but am doing some work on a friend's 98 V70 AWD XC.

One of the items I'm concerned about is the state of the bevel gear. The car has been run over 15,000 km with a major (4/32 ") difference in the tread depth between the front and rear tires. I'd like to inspect the lubricant in the bevel gear for signs of overheating.

Through ALLDATA, I obtained Volvo's TSB 44300040011on "Bevel Gear - Revised Replacement Oil". That TSB refers to three different procedures to be done, based on the part number and serial number of the bevel gear. However, and I'm a little embarrased about this, I can't seem to find the part number/serial number of the bevel gear. Does anyone know where this information is?

I'm also a little unsure about the fill plug. There seems to be only one very small plug, about 2/3 of the way up the housing, I'm going from memory, but it looks to be no larger than 12 mm or so. Is that the fill plug, or is there a larger fill plug hidden somewhere else?

Garth, I bought my '99 V70 awd used with 46,000 mi. While crawling around underneath to inspect everything, I noticed a paper tag that was coming off of the sump like box that is bolted to the bottom of the Differential, or Bevel Gear box. Volvo calls it an "Oscillation Damper". It is a metal 5x7x1 inch sump like container full of oil apparently. The paper tag was glued on and the oil leaking from it soften'd it I quess. It's about 1" x 2" and has 2 bar codes on it. Below the upper code is P9445908 and 3,31 which is the part # and gear ratio. Written below the second barcode is T103232 and then AWD. The Dlr. tells me that they need that info to do a service on the oil inside..... Excuse me, I said, why is it paper and why is it gluded on if it's so important ?? The reply was "I don't know..." nice huh, Tom

      Tom,

Thanks for the info. I'll take another look at the oscillation damper next time I have the car jacked up, to see if the stickers are still on it. I don't remember seeing anything like that last time I looked, so I suspect that they may have peeled off at some time.

Based on the information on the TSB, your part number indicates you have the latest style bevel gear housing, with the new type of oil and the fill plug at the correct (.75 L) level.

Hey Garth, I just went into Alldata under TSB's and couldn't find any 44300040011. The only thing I could find was replacing a vent valve on the Bevel gear box. My car is a '99 and that is the only car I can look up according to the subscription service. Is that TSB something you could fax to me ? E-mail to me ? Thanks, Tom

          Tom,

The TSB may be just for 1998 vehicles, but I don't mind sending it to you. Send me an email to garth.gullekson@sympatico.ca so I'll have your email address plus a reminder to do it (I'm just about to go away for a few days so won't be checking my email/brickboard till about Monday). Throw in your fax number just in case I can't get the tsb massaged into something suitable for email.

Thank you for the TSB #. I've got an Alldata subscription so I'll check it out. BTW, the one paper sticker with those 2 barcodes and numbers was on the vertical rear surface of the O.Damper. Tom

If it's been damaged from different sized tires, it'll make noise and often when making a sharp turn such as doing tight 180 degree turns in a parking lot. It can also make noise driving it normally but only if severely damaged and if so, it's usually then so overheated that it's also leaking fluid, burning on the front exhaust pipe (nice huh?).

There is no drain plug from the factory so if you want the fluid changed, I'd advise having a dealer do it following the info in the TSB or TNN.

To do it, one lower case bolt is removed, then one drills through alluminum into the case until going into the fluid. One then needs to flush out the alluminum shavings, then re-fill the unit with a specified amount of a special type fluid (not just 75W gear lube).
The plug you're seeing is the filler plug and that's that, nothing else.
