Speaker Upgrade S40-V40

I'm thinking of upgrading the stock speakers, which are barely passable, on my 2000 S40.
I've got the factory FM/Tape/6 CD changer and the standard 6 speakers. Has anyone had good
results by ONLY changing the speakers? If so, what sizes and brands do you recommend?
I remember reading here about a 4ohm/8ohm issue. Should this be a concern? Thanks.

The Volvo head units suck. Speakers will only improve the sound a little. I upgraded everything in my S40 and it sounds so much better......

It is a piece of shit indeed. I replaced my 816 with an Eclipse cd 8062 headunit and precision power pcx480 (4X80 RMS)amp with rainboW 3 piece components. The tweets have been relocated to the doors, the 4" are mounted in the dash (old tweet location) and I built custom 7" pods for the doors.I am running 4 image dynamics 8" subs with a pci 2350 that is 700 watts rms at 4 ohms. It sounds really good, a hell of an improvement over stock. My biggest complaint about the 816 is that the radio reception sucks! I have used three different combos, email me with any questions or suggestions.

Interesting to hear the opinion on the head unit.

I have a 440. I replaced the original head unit with a basic Pioneer CD unit and left the standard speakers. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it sounds.

This week, my 440 is off the road and I am driving the family 850 SE 󞩼]
Even though it should have a better system, I can't adjust the sound to be anything like the other car.

      Regards,
      David H

Oh, as for the 8 ohm comment, very few car audio systems are 8ohms and Volvo is not one of them. If you happen to have the special 8ohm version, email me and I will tel you how to fix it.

Check the wiring diagrams first, and compare them to the actual wiring. If you have pairs of 8-ohm speakers in parallel, a straight speaker-for-speaker swap with 4-ohm replacements could fry your rig. The wiring diagram --and searching this board with the model # of your head unit--will also help tell you whether you are running all the speakers off the headunit, or whether you have a separate amp running the additional speakers.

That said, unless you are a hyperpurist, even medium-priced speakers such as infinity or Polk will sound quite good with the factory headunits and amps. If you want to spend more, and have the ears to appreciate it, there are a lot of MB Quart speakers and other expensive goodies. Check Crutchfield's to get the general idea, then check ebay if you want to take some risk and do without a service dept or warranty.

Sizes will depend on what size holes are there and the available depth, and possibly some ingenuity in mounting. Advise how the project goes; what you learn may help the next guy avoid a problem.
