850 Auto Transmission- Unnecessary Replacements due to Misdiagnosis ? 850

My Volvo indy mechanic pointed out a a problem with the 850's auto transmission that often goes mis-diagnosed resulting in an unnecessary costly replacement of the transmission.

Apparently inside the auto transmission are 2 "speed sensors". It's about a $1,000 job to fix (mainly the labor involved in pulling the transmission). Not cheap to fix, but much less than a new or rebuilt transmission.

This is of course different from the PNP switch which can be replaced without pulling the transmission.

He mentioned that a customer recently had her transmission overhauled for $2,500 only to have the problem resurface. Lo and behold it was the speed sensors.

Apparently , this problem is not widely known by even volvo specialists.

This was the first that I'd heard on this - Anyone have any input on this ?
