95' 850 Turbo Wagon TRACS question

Recently it was raining and I stopped at a stop sign, upon proceeding I apparently gave way to much pressure on the gas pedal causing the front wheels to spin. The TRACS system was on, I never turn it off. I am under the impression that with the system engaged, if one wheel starts to spin the system sends the power to the other wheel. I know from experience with other cars that what usually happens is that the system will ignore the amount of pressure I'm applying to the gas pedal until the low traction situation is gone and then it will go back to normal. Upon asking the dealership about this, they said that the system is meant for stability control. Their example is that if I was traveling a bit fast in a turn and the car began to skid that the system would sense it and compensate by reducing power to the skidding wheel and apply the power to the wheel w/ more traction. This didn't seem right, but with this being my first Volvo I wasn't sure if the system worked differently. Anyone have any knowledge on this? Is the dealer just stringing me along?

    95' 850 Turbo Wagon TRACS question

    If you car has TRACS it will apply brake to the spinning wheel.....letting the other wheel pull the car. It CAN be over powered by the engine....or shut off by the driver.

    If you have STC/TRACS(on 99> models)it will not only apply brake....it will also cut engine power until good traction is found. It can be over powered(for a second) by the engine....BUT its harder to do than on a car with TRACS only.

    Now....here is what you dealer(sales person???)is talking about.....its called DSTC(dynamic stability traction control).....I dont fully understand exactly how it works....but I know it will detect yaw.....and correct it. Like you dealer said...going around a turn, and you start to loose it....it will HELP you get it back.

    95' 850 Turbo Wagon TRACS question

    TRACS pulses the brake on the spinning wheel, which in turn allows the other side to grab. It has no effect on engine power output on pre 99 models.

      So am I correct in expecting that from a stop that the wheels should not be able to spin or should they? The mechanics said that the system is working to spec and that if you step on the gas the wheels will spin when traction is low.

        there is no limited slip differential (only available in euro-spec t5-r and r manuals). as previously said, the tracs only applies the brakes when it detects wheel spin. try it again, u should feel a very intrusive grinding/crunching noise when u r on the throttle too hard on wet pavement.

        The wheels will spin, just more "controlably" TRACS on the 850's isn't all it's cracked up to be. If you have an owner's manual, there is more info about it there, if you don't have one, you can download the manual from www.volvousa.com Go to the owner's circle & search around...
