Transmission fluid S70

My 98 S70 T5 5 speed manual transmission is approaching 40,000 miles. is it time to change the transmission fluid?

Changing manual transmission gear oil.... are you having a problem? S70

I don't believe a change is required according to the Volvo service schedules. Although it might be interesting to see how much metal there is floating around inside the transmission. I believe the gear oil is a synthetic specially formulated for Volvo and is a special order item because this is done infrequently. I haven't done it, yet.
