A Smooth Odometer? 850 1995

OK, now that I'm running out of things to fix on my '95 855 GLT na, I noticed while driving home tonight that the odometer and trip meter don't roll smoothly. Like there is somthing sticking, or catching, or needs lube. I can't tell if it is suppossed to roll smothly from tenth mile to tenth, mine makes 3 or 4 jerky motions to change tenth. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Chuck.

Analog odometer staccato motion 850 1995

I believe the odometer is actually operated by electrical impulses from a sensor, there is no rotating speedometer cable. It is normal for the numbers to move in stepped fashion. It does look cheesy, but I think it has to work this way. Later years went to LCD readout. Also, might have had to be this way because some cars had an option with a trip computer that calculates mileage, etc.

My 96 854 does the same thing....I've learned to ignore it.

Soon it will quit completely-then you can forget about it. Base maint. on annual usage or add a cheap engine clock.

I know our 240 was like that. I believe it's just the way the plastic gears mesh that turn it. (I had taken it all apart for another reason and lokked at it.) Haven't really paid attention to my wife's 850. Probably the same way.
