What is an interior air filter and do I need to change it sometimes?

Depends on model and year. The one on my 01 V70 is above the passenger footwell. Volvo recommends changing at 15K mile intervals. About $15 US over the counter at the dealer.

POLLEN FILTERS ARE UNDER THE HOOD IN FRONT OF THE WIPERS.
THE ACT AS A PRE-FILTER FOR YOUR HVAC.
UNLESS YOU DRIVE IN A DUSTY AREA,I WOULD CHANGE IT TWICE AS OFTEN AS THEY RECOMMEND.I THINK THEY SUGGEST ANNUALLY.I DO MINE EVERY TWO YEARS.

Above for a 70 series. 40 and 80 series may be different (but
the site has instructions for those, too). And yep, they need
replacing.
