65K SERVICE?? 850

I am getting ready to have my 97 850 wagon with 65k
serviced,

timing belt of course,
what else should I have done.

my mechanic has recomened 60k service, but I think
most of it is done already.

currently the following things have been done between 53k and now.
new wires, plugs and cap
new gas filter/air filters
fuel trap cleaned
tranny flushed
coolant flushed
new themostat
new brakes pad, disk, and front cailpers
new tires of course.
oil every 3000.

I plan on keeping the car at least 120k

65K SERVICE?? 850

Don't bother replacing the water pump.

I cannot remember a single post, since I have been on this board, concerning an 850 water pump failure. They just do not occur on low-mileage cars. Past 140K, or 210K, maybe, but not at 65K.

The likelyhood that the mechanic changing your water pump accidentally, strips a bolt, or doesn't tighten the bolt correctly, or doesn't replace the 'o-'ring/gasket, or forgets to put a bolt in, or uses a cheap replacement pump, etc., etc., etc. . . . is far more likely that a water pump failure.

Although water pump replacement, on cars with chronic water pump failures, is a good idea, this is one of the few Volvo parts which appears reliable. So, leave it alone.

You sound all set. If plugs were done at 53K, you don't need to change them again until 83K. Have your hinges greased and wheel stops greased. As a precaution, if yours is a non-turbo, have the flame trap checked just for safety sake. If it clogs, there goes your rear main seal and $1,100 of you hard earned cash. Also, there's a recall on your seat heaters (possibly). Have them fix that too if yours is affected.

Don't forget to change your brake fluid. That's one of the items on the 30K check up. (it should be done at least every other year...)

Very low failure rates on water pumps, and they usually don't just stop. They start to leak. If you have one, maybe the pollen filter?

You sound pretty much good to go on all the other maintenence items, if they were performed. A couple hints though. 1) Have the suspension retorqued. This will take away some of those annoying little rattles. 2) If they or you are going to do the timing belt, might as well do the water pump too while you are there. It's cheap insurance. If it's a dealer, see if you could talk to the actual mechanic, give him a new pump ( dealer price is way too high) and $35.00-- see if he'll bite. Or talk to the service manager and see if they would install a pump you provided. Good luck
