Sweet smell from vents at start up, coolant leaking? no noticeable loss in coolant res. 850 1995

Sweet smell coming from vents at start up, seems to go away as car warms up. not as noticeable when temp controls set to cool. Does this mean heater core is leaking? Coolant reservoir is still at same level for 3 weeks now. Anyone have success with those additives that seal / fix leaks in cooling system? Has this happened to you? Thank you for sharing your knowledgein experience. Love my bright red 95 turbo wagon.

I've been putting my heater core fix on hold.
I started getting smell symptoms at about 30 months. Now 48 months old.

Is there a chance that you can get heater core symptoms
with loose piping at the core. In other words either
the O-rings are going or the clamps just need to be
      tightened a little.

I've seen the o-rings leak too but you can't tighten anything, just replace the o-rings IF that's it. You can pull the carpet back and see the pipes too.
Heater cores have been more problematic with newer cars, like X70s but they're easy to replace too (IE: no dash removal required).

          Hey Ron,

Let's start with the malfunctioning O ring theory.
If the O rings are malfunctioning can you get the light
coolant smell lets say if the small amount of coolant
is dripping on the hot in and out pipes.

I've pulled both sides of the carpet to gain access
to the heater matrix. Did about a dozen times now
so i'm comfortable with it and quick.
          Have not removed the matrix
cover yet. From what your saying there is nothing
to tighten at the in and out pipes to secure them
to the core. Does the core just sit on the O rings?

I remember someone here saying to jiggle the core
back and forth to get it off the pipes.

I did a seach and found little info on the core
          exchange procedures.

Yes, your right, the heater core problem on the 70
series seems to be a growing malady. Volvo must of
          made a poor supplier decision.
