cost of volvo servicing 850 1996

I have just bought first volvo and was wondering as to the general cost of volvo servicing. I always used general garages for servicing previously but feel I need to use volvo garage this time.

Where do you live? I'm sure someone around here knows a good mechanic in your area.

Generally it's no worse or better than most Eurocars. Surprisingly, it's actually a little better than the local Honda dealer was for servicing my wife's Oddy. (I think they make up for the lack of warranty business by doing much more routine service than Honda requires.)

Where my Volvo goes for servicing dealer or indy shop, and which indy shop depends on the specific service and problem.

Here in Charlotte, NC the dealer is $70/hr. An indy that does Volvo's, BMW, and Benz is $75/hour (they think they're special). Another primarily Volvo one is $59/hr.

My shade tree costs $0 per hour, but I'm finding the 850 has a mind of it's own compared to our old 240......

Find a mechanic that is very familiar with Volvos- often indies have cheaper labor rates than dealers, but many dealers have good techs also. Ask around- friends, co-workers where they have their Volvos repaired. I think you will find that it will cost more than a Honda/Toyota/Mazda to maintain but probably less than a BMW/Benz. These cars are pretty easy to work on so many of us do our own work to save on maintenance.

I highly suggest you go to auot parts supply store (Auto Zone) and pick up a Hayes manual for your car. They are not the find all/fix all solution, but are well worth the $10-15 price. The manuals cover a wide range of topics. I try to do most of the trouble shooting and repair myself. The manuals have proven to be time and money savers again and again.

Even if you are not mechanically inclined to do you own work, get one, read it. If you have a general knowledge of the workings of the car, you will be able to detect problems early. This can help you explain things to a mechanic. You will also pick up tips on how to do simple things like bulb changes and simple car care maintainance. (like lubrication points to keep the doors working smoothly.
