Keyless entry/Remote entry S70 1998

Finally, we have joined the modern Volvo era, and with it, keyless entry.

I think I made my first mistake though. I did some basic research on Brickboard, Swedespeed, etc...and intially determined that I could get an additional key fob, keyless entry control, from eBay and reprogram it myself. Bought one off eBay...$15.00....

WRONG! Only true for pre-98 850/s70 variants...

I am also reading that the reprogramming will require a Volvo Scan Tool..and that maybe I shouldn't have bought the eBay fob because some sort of PIN is required in addition?

Can anyone lay out the whole procedure for a reprogram (incl. approximate costs)? I have one working fob that came with the car from the previous owner and one eBay fob. The car is a 1998 s70 GLT.

Thanks,

Josh

Josh, I am pretty sure that the "gameboy" Volvo Scan Tool is required to program your car's ECU to recognize a key fob. When using the VST, the tech will need a PIN for your car as well. The PIN is available, I believe to the Volvo dealers based on your car's VIN, so no problem there. I bought my '98 S70 new and upon delivery I the dealer had only one fob. At my request they gave me a second one and programmed it right there in front of me using the VST. They did need the PIN, but they had it right there since the car was being sold by them, but I believe any Volvo dealer can obtain the pin from Volvo.

Hope that helps, $15 for the fob is cheap, but the dealer will probably charge you one hour's worth of labor to get it to work with your car.

Good luck and enjoy the car!
