5 speed manual transmission 850

My transmission stated giving me problems when changing gear yesterday. If I attempt to change from say 1st to 2nd, or 3rd to 4th, etc above about 4000 RPM, I have real difficulty getting it into gear - very tight (sometimes so tight I cannot actually get it into the gear). I can however put it into the next gear up, eg. 5th. Below 400 RPM, gear change is pretty much normal - a little notchy but no worse than it ever is.

The car has done 150k miles and is a 2.0 20V estate (wagon). Anyone had difficulties like this? Is it likely to be start of a dead gearbox, or just the clutch needing replaced? I was going to change the gearbox oil just incase this helps - although that was done about 15,000 miles ago...

Thanks in advance

Campbell...

Have you check the tranny oil level lately? I changed my fluid and had some stiff shifting - went back and figured that my driveway 'level surface' resulted in my adding too much fuild. drained off some and problem went away.

I have been advised by mechanic friend that my symptoms are typical of a worn crankshaft bearing. When the clutch is depressed, it moves the crankshaft slightly, causing the clutch to not fully engage.

Does this sound plausible? My mate was a Volvo mechanic for over 10 years, but doesn't live nearby so hasn't actually looked at the car.

    Thanks

Sounds like a clutch - but you say there are no issues going into 1st or R at standstill? Seems like a synchro problem. Is there a difference down shifting or upshifting?

I would try some new fluid. Gonna try the Volvo special juice?

Yeah - no problems going into any gear at standstill, or up until about the 4000 rpm mark. Then it gets really tight...both going up and down gears.

Changing the gearbox oil seems like first step. Will try that very soon.

      Thanks, Campbell..

i think 4000 rpm is too high for 1st or 2nd gears to be in the first place unless you were stuck in mud or snow and are spinning. under normal circumstances, driving from standstill, i have shifted to 2nd and even 3rd by the time engine hits 2000-2500 rpm. I try to stay under 3500 when cruising at 65mph in 5th.

In the past I have had no problems taking the car to 6000 RPM in every gear (except 5th) - there does seem to be a rev limiter about 7000 RPM in first gear. My 2.0 20V seems to be very gutless at 2000 RPM, main power band is 4000 RPM+, so I regularly take to high revs in various gear.

This seems like some sort of mechanical issue - since it has only started happening a few days ago.

Yeah - I suppose I do...especially since it has done 150K miles. I might have damaged the gearbox by revving too hard in low gears - gonna sell it soon for a T5 (either 850 or S70), need more performance than 143 BHP can provide. Although, the engine is still solid after 21K miles in the last year, driving pretty hard.

Just annoying that gearbox is getting glitchy now...

            I WANT THE T5R
BUT NOT SURE IF I CAN DEAL WITH THE TROUBLE ITS HARD ENOUGH
KEEPING MY TO 850 GLT'S RUNNING

Yeah - I would love an 850R or S70R, although I suppose the V70R AWD would be the dream car if money was no object - but it is, so I suppose a T5 will have to do...

This could be a clutch issue with my 850 GLT - has done 150k miles, will get that checked when gearbox fluid changed.

Not really - seems to happen all the time - I first noticed it yesterday after a 175 mile run. And this morning, I had the same problem when it was cold. Seems to be when the gearbox is spinning fast and I try and change gear - I don't understand why I can change up a couple of gears but not just one gear.

      1st - 2nd at 4000 - 6000 RPM won't go, but 1st - 5th will be fine at this range.
