Farewell to my troublesome S80 - Verdict rendered - Sentenced to pergatory! S80 1999

This car I bought on February 1, 2003 has been an amazing pain in the hind parts. It's now February 18th and I have been able to 'joy' ride in this car a total of 3 times. The balance has been in the shop, or waiting to go into the shop. Idle problems, surging, emissions errors, extra lights blinking on the dash, etc. Now the final straw. My wife wanted to drive this one while we went out for dinner. About 3 miles down the road we heard a clunk. We looked at each other and she said, what fell off? Got to the restaraunt and lo and behold the left front parking/turn lamp had jumped out of its place and was hanging by the wire. Enough!! After owning a 240 for 15 years (still have it) I thought an S80 would be a dream car. Not so, it's a nightmare car. Now the good news, the dealer has agreed to take the car back and give me all my money back. Can't wait until Thursday, February 20th when the car hauler comes and I see this car leaving my neighborhood. Unbelievable this one. It drives absolutely wonderfully on the open road, but has so many other problems. Well, I ramble. Sorry Volvo made this one and I got tangled up in it. Back to the 240 Brickboard page for me. See you on the 'other' pages.

You're lucky that the dealer was "decent" about it.

R2,
Yep, '99 S80s and '92/93 850s....stay away from 'em....Every car manufaucturer has years they would rather forget...Volvo is no different..

You're lucky that you're able to get out of it so easily. The '99 S80s are by far the worst year for those but many '00s that were previous lease return cars are almost equally bad for a second hand car owner because these cars simply saw NO maintenance and are in TERRIBLE condition when the used car managers buy them. Most dealers then spend thousands trying to fix and resell these at some sort of profit yet unfortunately, many of these cars still continue to develope new bugs as time goes on.
If you ever decide to try another S80, get a newer one ('02 on up) and don't buy a lease return car, usually a "certified used car" when resold at a dealership with an extended warranty. I think that in short order, Volvo's going to lose money on trying to warranty those cars longer than the normal warranty as most have simply lead very hard early lives of no maintenance (neglect) and abuse. Many have also been in accidents from what we see with substandard body and paint repairs.
The S80 is nothing like the older, dependable, durable RWDs like 240s/740s/940s (note, I'm excluding diesels and ALL 6 cyl from that list).

Your're wrong! Not all leased vehicles have been mistreated. I've leased an S80 00 for 3 years and have taken excellent care of the car. My plan was to buy it at end of lease. However, Volvo has been completely unreasonable when I attempted to negotiate residual value - which they pegged at 27k. Auction prices are about 18k. So - I bought a Mercedes E320.
