Gear Shift Selector Light Out 850 1994

The light that comes on for my gear selector is out; how can I troubleshoot the cause? Is it most likely the bulb or can it be something else? Any tips on replacing the bulb?

What type of bulb to replace it, can I use an aftermarket bulb or do I need a bulb from the dealer? It's just inconvenient for me to get to the dealer and the local autoparts shop is a lot closer.

What's the deal with light bulbs and 850s???!!!

Thanks

also a good idea after replacing the bulbs to dim the lights to around 80%
Will save the life of the bulbs

For a good procedure on how to get at the lamps in the center console go to http://kinovolvo.cjb.net and click on "USEFULL INFO" and "REPLACEMENT OF THE SHIFT LOCK MICRO SWITCH".

You will find good directions on how to remove the console. It is a good idea to replace all the lamps in there when you have it off. I think there are two types, only available from Volvo.
Good luck.

i had the same problem with my 1998s70glt.

it is a special,expensive dealer bulb($4.00 i think)

i have an automatic so i ended up taking just about the entire center console apart to get to the bulb.i dont remember the exact prodedure.i just started taking out screws and bolts around the shift lever till i got to it.
allow yourself at least an hour.good luck.dont remember if the haynes manual was any help.but worth a look see.
