Info on Hydrulic Lifters(HL) 850 1997

Just completed some engine(T Belt; S Belt; tranny flush; oil & filter change, O2 sensor and other misc.) work on the brick and she's running like new again. Now, in the last few weeks the HL have been very noisy on and off. Some times it's worse than others. The tech. said I need to address them to solve the problem. Since I just spent a small fortune doing repairs, was wondering how serious this problem is and what to expect to spend! Whats the cause and how involve is the fix? TIA, BD
PS- at the repair facility(Rawbear Performance) they had about 6 bad ABS ECUs to return to Volvo. tech said he replaces about 2 a week! Just pisses me off more to know I may have to pay for Volvos shitty Tracs unit!!!!

    Hi ya,

I have a UK spec 94 / changeover type 2L 20V. I too suffer the problem with noisy lifters, well you need ear plugs in the first 10 minutes.

I use Mobil 1, over here it is 0/40 grade. Due to the thinness it does make the sound actually worst until the engine is warmed up properally. When she is at operating temp you wouldn't know she suffers from this.

I did ask how much the fix was for this and it came back at £1200 pound or in Uncle Sam money $1800. Do i have a real problem i ask ? Know not really if you can put up with the noise then don't have the work done.

As she is 9 years old now and covered 189k miles if when back in worked and i've saved enougth up i'll have the job done.

I had this problem off and on until the indy Volvo mech diagnosed it as a leaky seal in the oil pump. I don't remember exactly how much it cost to fix this part since I had other stuff done at the same time but I believe it was less than $200.

We had lifter noise as you describe occassionally on my 850GLT Wagon. It was recommended by someone on this board that we use Mobil 1 oil (10-50). We made the switch and no more noise. We consistently change the oil every 3,000 mi. PS: We're going to have to address the ABS/Tracs issue soon, but we have 147,000 miles. The light is on 75% of the time now.
