Is it cost effective to buy a scanner 850 1995

What do ya' think? Is it cost effective for me to buy an engine scanner? Right now my check engine light is telling me that my oxygen sensor is failing. Well, that's what my Volvo repair shop tells me. The car is running fine. The only annoyance is the orange light on the dash.

I am inclined to buy an engine scanner if I can find one reasonably enough to 1) put the diagnostics in the owners hands and 2) to reset the dash light.

Let me know what you think. michel@cstone.net

... buy a scanner? You should not need one! 850 1995

If your 850 is a 1995, you do not need a scanner. There should be two small black boxes in the right (the car's right) front corner of the engine compartment. You can read your codes by plugging the wire on each into the proper terminal and pressing the button properly. There is an explanation on how to do this, and a reasonably good list of codes in the Haynes manual for 850s.

Alex Pepper has a unit that will reset the oil service light as well as read the codes http://www.obd-2.com
On e-Bay there are many code reader some that will only give you the code # ($50)others that will give the code# and an explanation ($100+)

I have found mine to be well worth the money.

I have heard of one simular that also resets your service(engine oil change)light and cannot remember who makes it. I'm sure other members could answer that question.
