Fuel Map corrupted by octane switching? therefore: poor mileage S70

Hi,

I've been getting poor mileage. People who've read my thread know my gripe. Well, I'm wondering if any of you guys heard of this one: My service manager at Don Beyer Volvo said that my switching between 89 and 93 octane fuel messes up the fuel map in the ECU. He said that a factory rep told him this and that the owners manual even reccomends that an operator stick to one octane rating of fuel. A consequence of a confused fuel map is poor mileage. He said this. The Ecu optimizes engine paramters around multiple variables and fuel octane is one of them.

He was saying that the ECU "learns" the car over multiple driving cycles and runs numbers to compute settings for the most optimal performance. For example, a guy drives a car at say 10-40mph for an extended time period, the ECU incorporates speed variables into its optimization calculations. Accordingly the car is supposed to get its best mileage in that speed range. All of a sudden, start driving 60-70, performance will suck until ECU develops a new performance map. According to what the factory rep told him, the ecu works like the human body's central nervous system. The human body can only regulate irregularities so much before its control mechanisms are overwhelmed. I remember taking a process engineering class in college and we studied controller mechanisms such as thermostats. The Ecu doesn't have an instantaneous optimization response time since it needs to record data that suggests an optimizable performance trend.

Guys, opinions??? Ask around, is this real or bogus? The service manager sounded sincere. Was he trying to razzle dazzle me into shutting up?

Fuel Map corrupted by octane switching? therefore: poor mileage S70

When I bought my '99 S70 the sales rep (Village Volvo, Belair, MD)recommended sticking with one brand of gas and one octane because the engine control system adjusts to it or "learns". While this may be BS as one message puts it, it confirms the advice given to you by the Don Beyer folks.

Soon after I bought the car there were two instances of the engine faltering seriously and the ECU light coming on. Turning off the ignition and restarting the engine put things back to normal. I called the service department at VV and was told to ignore it. I did and have had no more instances of the ECU light coming on. Perhaps the system was still "learning" my brand and octane of gas and my driving style. Anyway, I tend to stay with one brand, generally, and 89 octane always.

Who knows what goes on in the ECU!

Horse Sh**!! I switch between 89 and 92/93 frequently, especially when I fill up at a place where gas prices are higher than average. My wife is a cheapskate and occasionally fills up with 87. I've never noted any difference at all in gas mileage. Power drops off a little when running 87, but mileage doesn't.

As I replied before, I've never heard of "fuel mapping" either. Even if there is some such thing, it doesn't possibly explain your low MPG (earlier post). My experience with changing fuel octanes is exactly the same as Johnh's: same MPG, less power.

Sounds like dealer technobabble to me. Try another dealer first. if this does not work, ask the dealer the name of the District Service Rep for Volvo and take it up with them. In my experience (Volvo owner 21 yrs.) if you are nice about it, this sometimes gets results.
