All dealers parts department have a somewhat adjustable pricing system and the bottom line price depends entirely on what that parts manager wants to sell his parts for. They ALL get the parts for the exact same price from Volvo so the difference is simply based on the additional profit potential desired and naturally, they're there to make money like everyone else.
At my dealer, the price varies but it's typically about $1600 for a reman trans. There IS a core charge and would be anywhere because the selling dealer has to send your old trans (core) back to Volvo for rebuilding or they're charged that amount from Volvo. All dealers will have a core charge so if anyone's saying otherwise over the phone, they're wrong (won't happen). If you want to keep your old trans, you'll have to pay the core charge otherwise it's refunded to you when they get the old trans back. If you have the trans replaced at any dealership, you'll never be charged the core charge in the first place, that'd only be an issue to you if you buy the trans from them and have another shop install it.
Now, as for buying a trans from a dealer not close to your house, it will cost alot of money for S&H both ways, you will then have to pay a core charge and if you then want to get the core charge back they will have to get your old trans back. You'ld be best to have it done locally.
As for choosing one dealer over the other, that depends on your opinion on which one you like better than the other, reputation, and perhaps price. If you'ld prefer one with a better price, you can ask the other if they'll match the price for you as they often will if they think they'ld loose the job otherwise.
